Experiment 6: Perspective

... or "Shake it up and Experiment".

How to shake up our creative process? Answer: try a different perspective. Move out of comfort zone and try something different. Be curious, challenge yourself to try different palates or work with different mediums. Talk to creative people who work in different mediums that you admire because there are always nuggets to be mined that you can bring back to your own perspective and projects.

Basically the message this month is this: Find small ways to get out of your comfort zone and see what emerges. Actually, what was also shown but not said was to get out of your comfort zone in tangible ways - DO or create something (even if very small) that you can look, touch, consider.  Emergence for creative work isn't about keeping it in your head and thinking about it- each of these teachers/coaches showed how they took an idea and upended it on its head in a physical piece - or series - of works. A visual journey, so to speak, that shows a progression and narrates the actual walk into that shift of perspective.

Another idea was to have a travel kit that gives me small projects to work with that don't have to be seen as a final project. Val's squares of fabrics and circles ready for applique along with embroidery thread for hand work was a great idea. I'm curious about how it would be to pack up something like that - and loosely plan for what might inspire me at place I am going. One of the joys I find in traveling is allowing that part of the world - its culture, art, and history - to inspire me.

As far as experiments go this month, I think I'm going to try to work with the color wheel and try things with "triads" and contrasting colors. I took one of Jean Well's color design classes online and it made me thoughtful. Dreaming In Color. I am mulling over how I choose colors to work with and what can happen when I ask myself that good 'ol question "what if" when it comes to accents and highlights. We'll see what I come up with.

Takeaway: Learn new things about your own perspective. DO - don't just contemplate. Even if it means simply snipping fabric swaths and playing with color groups. DO. And take this with you wherever you go.
